The Next Phase in Angola: Implementing the iSDG

The second phase of the Integrated iSDG Model for the Development Planning Process in Angola project, a joint initiative of the Government of Angola, UNDP Angola, and Millennium Institute, kicked off with a comprehensive week-long training program held in Luanda, Angola, from June 5 to 9, 2023.

This exciting endeavor builds on the solid foundation laid during the first phase (2021-2022) of the project, during which we developed the Integrated Sustainable Development Goals Model (iSDG), a dynamic policy simulation tool that generates country-specific development scenarios, illuminating the impact of various policy decisions on Angola's progress toward the SDGs for Angola.

The first phase involved using the iSDG Angola model to conduct an in-depth assessment of the impacts of investments across key sectors such as agriculture, education, infrastructure, and health, on key sustainable development indicators. Our work resulted in a comprehensive report highlighting the main findings from the model simulations. We also trained the national technical team comprising of the Ministry of Economy and Planning (MEP), Ministry of Finance (MINFIN), and the National Institute of Statistics (INE) in policy design using the iSDG model.

This second phase of the project is focused on building the national technical team's capacity to further develop and integrate the iSDG model into their workflow, and more broadly strengthening the Government of Angola's capacity to manage its development agenda. This will involve aligning the National Development Plan 2023-2027 and the Long-Term Strategy of Angola (Angola 2050) with the SDGs, critically assessing policies and programs for SDG progress and estimating public investment requirements and financing needs.
