Earth4All Kenya: Five Turnarounds towards Wellbeing for All within Planetary Boundaries

Earth4All proposes five extraordinary turnarounds, on poverty, inequality, empowerment, food and energy, to achieve wellbeing for all within planetary boundaries. In Kenya, the initiative set out to define what this means for the country and how it can accelerate progress on the SDGs and the national Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda.

Intervention

Working with the Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP), the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA), the international Earth4All team and a wide range of stakeholders, the Millennium Institute provided the system dynamics modelling for the study. The analysis compared two scenarios to 2050, Too Little Too Late and Giant Leap, and identified opportunities and policy recommendations across the five turnarounds.

Key Policies and Reccomendations

  • Ending poverty by 2035. Under the Giant Leap scenario, the model shows poverty eliminated and universal access to basic services reached by 2035.

  • Lower inequality and sustainable land use. Inequality falls sharply, gender parity in schooling is achieved, and harvested areas are fully sustainably managed by 2050, putting almost all SDGs within reach.

  • The cost of current trends. Under Too Little Too Late, poverty and inequality persist and development losses mount, underlining the value of coordinated action across the five turnarounds.
