Earth4All Austria: Five Turnarounds towards Wellbeing for All within Planetary Boundaries
Earth4All proposes five extraordinary turnarounds, on poverty, inequality, women's empowerment, food and energy, to achieve wellbeing for all within planetary boundaries. Austria was one of the two pilot countries for Earth4All's national engagement work, led by the Austrian Chapter of the Club of Rome.
Intervention
A team from BOKU University Vienna and the Millennium Institute transferred the global Earth4All scenarios to the national level using the iSD model, combined with a broad stakeholder process. The analysis compared two scenarios to 2050: Too Little Too Late, which continues current trends, and Giant Leap, in which the five turnarounds are implemented together with a transformation of the economic system.
Key Policies and Reccomendations
Turnarounds work best together. The model shows that implementing all five turnarounds together can significantly reduce poverty and inequality in Austria while transforming the economy in ways that support the wellbeing of both people and the planet.
Current trends lead to stagnation. Under the Too Little Too Late scenario, which continues current trends, Austria's progress stalls on both social and environmental goals.
Modelling grounded in stakeholder dialogue. Combining national modelling with a broad stakeholder process helped define what wellbeing within planetary boundaries means for Austria and which policies could deliver it.
