Training Programs Overview Capacity Building with the Millennium Institute

The Millennium Institute (MI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing policy impact using simulation and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through education and capacity building. With over 40 years of experience, MI has worked in more than 40 countries, particularly in the Global South.

The Sustainable Development Simulator (iSD Model)

At the core of MI’s offerings is the Sustainable Development Simulator. This System Dynamics model utilizes real-world data to simulate development scenarios and assess the long-term impacts of various policies. By integrating economic, social, and environmental factors, the simulator allows for comprehensive policy analysis and strategic planning. The model encompasses 20+ sectors and reflects the interconnectedness of different areas, such as energy, agriculture, and health, illustrating how changes in one sector can affect others.

Training Programs Offered

MI provides a range of training programs tailored to various needs. These include academic courses in collaboration with institutions like the University of Bergen, as well as customized training for policy analysts and researchers interested in mastering the iSD model. Training is structured in phases, often beginning with online modules that introduce System Dynamics concepts, followed by in-person sessions emphasizing hands-on learning. These programs aim to equip participants with the skills necessary to create, refine, and utilize simulation models effectively.

The session introduced participants to the structure of the programs, recent applications, and opportunities for collaboration.

Our training approach is offered through two main pathways:

  • Academic Programs Developed in partnership with universities and academic institutions, these programs integrate Millennium Institute’s methodologies into structured learning environments. A long-standing collaboration with the University of Bergen, for example, brings System Dynamics and iSD modeling into master’s and PhD-level education. These courses equip students with both theoretical foundations and applied modeling skills for sustainable development.

  • Custom-Made Training Tailored to the specific needs of governments, organizations, or projects, these programs focus on applying tools and approaches directly to the client’s context. They combine foundational training in System Dynamics with hands-on modeling, scenario analysis, and policy design. Past programs have supported institutions such as the Institute of National Planning in Egypt and directorates of the European Commission, demonstrating how the approach adapts to diverse policy environments.

For a deeper exploration of the Sustainable Development Simulator, schedule a demo session with our policy analysts to discuss tailored applications for your country.
